With oil prices skyrocketing, the search is on for efficient and sustainable biofuels. According to Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, Solar cells are a US$13 billion global industry that will grow to US$40 billion by year 2012.

The Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERis) was launched to fill a critical gap in the clean-energy eco-systems. Headed by former director of Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems - one of the world's largest solar markets. SERis expect to receive SGD$130 million of funding over next few years.
