• 20,000 homes with energy savings features built under Green Mark Scheme
Singapore, Jan 2008
Efforts to have Singapore's building going green are paying off, with 20,000 more environmental friendly homes built across the island and 18,000 units more in the pipeline. BCA has dished out more than SGD$2.6 million in cash incentives to subsidize developers on about 20-projects to encourage adoption of green home standards.
The Building and Construction Authority said that the number of homes with energy-saving features has been on the rise since the Green Mark Scheme was introduced in 2005. These homes can save their occupants as much as $1,800 a year on power bills.
Green homes typically boast green features such as energy efficient air conditioners an water-efficient fittings which helps cut utility bills. There is also tremendous effort on tapping Solar power technology to enhance electricity utilization on water-heater system. Solar energy is also one of the research area Singapore would like to develop in conjunction with National University of Singapore.
Funds have been allocated from government's budget to make solar energy a possible alternative energy source. [To MainPage]
